Artist’s Statement

'Coming of age as an artist in late 1970’s Boston, I painted my way into the contemporary art scene.  Punk reigned supreme, performance and conceptual art began to highlight the forgotten role of women in the arts.  I soaked it all in while maintaining my own ideas for working.  Today, I paint abstract qualities found in painting nature and the human experience.'

                                                                                               - Lully Schwartz 2023

Art Process

by Lully Schwartz 2022

I am a painter, and I work with the glorious substance of oil paint.  I favor this medium since oil absorbs and reflects light, moves like soft butter, is brilliant for its flexible nature, and offers endless possibilities for color mixing.  My process for painting is straight-forward.  I start with pre stretched linen canvas; however, my largest paintings (typically 60 x 60 inches) are stretched by me.  My palette consists of approximately 10 colors for mixing an endless range of colors.  I mix color directly on a long narrow table which gives me ample room.

I work from source materials including sketches, imagination, life, and digital images. Currently, my art is imagined and often my source material is my memory.

I love the creative process, and if I’m not painting, I’m thinking about it. The physical process of painting is an all-day in the studio activity, much like anyone who goes to a nine to five job, with one exception: I may paint for six hours with the light of day and then break only to return to ‘tweek’ it during the evening hours.

The process of painting is an out-of-body experience for me, at times when all is going as I want.  There are painstaking moments, deliberating what stroke is working and what has to go.  Again, the flexibility of oil paint invites changes if changes are required.

I’m a painter of color and light, painting the real with abstract forms.  It’s how I see the world with all its complexities, moments of joy and pain, fear, and conquests.  It is my art world.
